When you need to convert IIF to CSV
- You have IIF exports from QuickBooks Desktop and want to read or audit them.
- You're moving to QuickBooks Online or another system that doesn't read IIF.
- You need a list of transactions with their accounts for a review.
How to convert IIF to CSV
- Drop your .iif file on the converter (up to 5 MB).
- Check that "Convert to" says CSV, and pick the date order if your dates are ambiguous.
- Click Convert: the CSV file downloads straight away. Nothing is stored.
- Open or import it: Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers — Open the file directly. Dates are written YYYY-MM-DD by default so they sort correctly in every locale.
What happens to your data
- Each TRNS line becomes a row with Date, Description (NAME), Amount, Debit, Credit, Memo, Check number (DOCNUM), Type (TRNSTYPE) and Account (ACCNT).
- The accounts of the SPL lines are listed in a Split account column.
- List sections (accounts, items, customers) are ignored; only transactions are converted.
Importing the CSV file
- Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers
- Open the file directly. Dates are written YYYY-MM-DD by default so they sort correctly in every locale.
- QuickBooks Online and Xero
- Both import CSV bank statements; columns are Date, Description, Amount (plus Debit and Credit), which their import screens can map in one step.
What is a IIF file?
IIF is QuickBooks Desktop's tab-separated import/export format. Transactions are written as a TRNS line (date, account, name, amount, memo, document number) followed by SPL lines for the other side of the entry and an ENDTRNS line. QuickBooks Online doesn't read IIF.
What is a CSV file?
A CSV file is a plain-text table: one row per transaction, columns separated by commas (or semicolons in many European banks). Every bank lays its CSV out differently, with its own column names, date order and sign convention, which is why accounting software often rejects a bank's CSV as it is.
