When you need to convert OFX to CSV

  • You want to review a bank's OFX download in Excel or Google Sheets.
  • Your budgeting or accounting tool imports CSV but not OFX.
  • You need to merge several OFX downloads into one table.

How to convert OFX to CSV

  1. Drop your .ofx file on the converter (up to 5 MB).
  2. Check that "Convert to" says CSV.
  3. Click Convert: the CSV file downloads straight away. Nothing is stored.
  4. Open or import it: Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers — Open the file directly. Dates are written YYYY-MM-DD by default so they sort correctly in every locale.

What happens to your data

  • Every STMTTRN becomes a row: Date, Description, Amount, Debit, Credit, then Memo, Check number, Type and Transaction ID when present.
  • Both OFX 1.x (SGML, no closing tags) and OFX 2.x (XML) are read; files with several accounts are combined and flagged.
  • Choose YYYY-MM-DD, MM/DD/YYYY or DD/MM/YYYY for the date column.

Importing the CSV file

Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers
Open the file directly. Dates are written YYYY-MM-DD by default so they sort correctly in every locale.
QuickBooks Online and Xero
Both import CSV bank statements; columns are Date, Description, Amount (plus Debit and Credit), which their import screens can map in one step.

What is a OFX file?

OFX is the open standard banks use to send transactions to finance software. A statement file carries the account, the currency, every transaction (date, signed amount, payee, memo, unique FITID) and the ledger balance. Version 1.x is SGML; version 2.x is XML. QBO and QFX are both OFX underneath.

What is a CSV file?

A CSV file is a plain-text table: one row per transaction, columns separated by commas (or semicolons in many European banks). Every bank lays its CSV out differently, with its own column names, date order and sign convention, which is why accounting software often rejects a bank's CSV as it is.

OFX to CSV: questions

Does it read OFX files from European banks?

Yes. Amounts written with a decimal comma are read correctly and the currency from the file is kept on the Excel output's File info sheet.

My OFX file has several accounts. What happens?

All transactions are written to one CSV and a note tells you the file contained several statements. Split them by the Transaction ID or date if you need one file per account.

Is the OFX to CSV converter free?

Yes. Format-to-format conversions are free and need no account. Files are converted in memory and never stored. Converting PDF bank statements is a separate tool with a free daily allowance.

Only have a PDF statement? Convert a PDF bank statement to CSV — digital or scanned, any bank.
