CSV to QBO converter

Your bank only gives you a CSV, but QuickBooks Desktop can't import bank transactions from a CSV — it wants a .qbo Web Connect file. Drop the CSV here: the columns and date format are detected automatically and you get a .qbo that QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online both import.

When you need to convert CSV to QBO

  • Your bank (or a fintech like Wise, Revolut or a payment processor) exports CSV but not QBO.
  • You use QuickBooks Desktop, which imports bank transactions from .qbo files only.
  • You want QuickBooks to skip duplicates when a month is imported twice: .qbo lines carry unique IDs, CSV lines don't.

How to convert CSV to QBO

  1. Drop your .csv file on the converter (up to 5 MB).
  2. Check that "Convert to" says QBO, and pick the date order if your dates are ambiguous.
  3. Click Convert: the QBO file downloads straight away. Nothing is stored.
  4. Open or import it: QuickBooks Desktop — File → Utilities → Import → Web Connect Files, choose the .qbo file, then pick an existing bank account or create one. Review the lines in the Bank Feeds Center and add or match them.

What happens to your data

  • Date, Description and Amount are found from the header (Date / Posting Date, Description / Payee / Details, Amount or separate Debit and Credit or Money in/Money out columns).
  • Dates are read in the file's own order: a day above 12 anywhere in the column proves DD/MM; you can also force MM/DD or DD/MM.
  • Amounts become signed TRNAMT values (negative = money out); a Balance column, if present, becomes the ending balance.
  • Each line gets a stable FITID built from its date, amount and description, so converting the same CSV again gives the same IDs.

What is a CSV file?

A CSV file is a plain-text table: one row per transaction, columns separated by commas (or semicolons in many European banks). Every bank lays its CSV out differently, with its own column names, date order and sign convention, which is why accounting software often rejects a bank's CSV as it is.

What is a QBO file?

A .qbo file is a QuickBooks Web Connect file: an OFX bank file with two extra Intuit tags (INTU.BID and INTU.USERID) that QuickBooks checks before it imports. It holds one account's transactions with a posted date, signed amount, payee, memo and a unique transaction ID (FITID) per line, plus the ending balance.

CSV to QBO: questions

Will QuickBooks Desktop accept the .qbo file?

Yes. The file uses the OFX 1.02 layout with the INTU.BID and INTU.USERID tags QuickBooks checks. On import QuickBooks asks which bank account to put the lines in; choose your existing account so the history stays together.

My CSV has Debit and Credit columns instead of one Amount. Does that work?

Yes. Debit, Withdrawal, Money out and Paid out columns are read as money out; Credit, Deposit, Money in and Paid in as money in. They are combined into one signed amount per line.

What if the dates come out wrong?

If every day in the file is 12 or lower, MM/DD and DD/MM can't be told apart and the converter assumes MM/DD (DD/MM for semicolon-separated European files). Pick the right order under "Dates in the file" and convert again.

Can I import the same month twice without duplicates?

If you convert the same CSV, yes: the IDs are derived from each line's content, so QuickBooks recognises lines it has already downloaded.

Is the CSV to QBO converter free?

Yes. Format-to-format conversions are free and need no account. Files are converted in memory and never stored. Converting PDF bank statements is a separate tool with a free daily allowance.

Only have a PDF statement? Convert a PDF bank statement to QBO — digital or scanned, any bank.
