A .qbo file is built for QuickBooks, so double-clicking it either launches QuickBooks or shows a wall of tags. Convert it to CSV to read the transactions, check them before importing, or load them into software that doesn't take Web Connect files.

When you need to convert QBO to CSV

  • You downloaded a .qbo from your bank and want to review or edit the lines before they reach QuickBooks.
  • Your accountant or another tool needs the transactions as a spreadsheet.
  • You're moving away from QuickBooks and need the bank history in a neutral format.

How to convert QBO to CSV

  1. Drop your .qbo file on the converter (up to 5 MB).
  2. Check that "Convert to" says CSV.
  3. Click Convert: the CSV file downloads straight away. Nothing is stored.
  4. Open or import it: Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers — Open the file directly. Dates are written YYYY-MM-DD by default so they sort correctly in every locale.

What happens to your data

  • Each STMTTRN becomes one row: Date (DTPOSTED), Description (NAME), Amount (TRNAMT), and the same amount split into Debit and Credit columns.
  • MEMO, CHECKNUM, TRNTYPE and FITID are kept as Memo, Check number, Type and Transaction ID columns when the file has them.
  • XML entities (&, <) are decoded, so payee names read normally.
  • Dates are written YYYY-MM-DD by default, or MM/DD/YYYY or DD/MM/YYYY if you choose.

What is a QBO file?

A .qbo file is a QuickBooks Web Connect file: an OFX bank file with two extra Intuit tags (INTU.BID and INTU.USERID) that QuickBooks checks before it imports. It holds one account's transactions with a posted date, signed amount, payee, memo and a unique transaction ID (FITID) per line, plus the ending balance.

What is a CSV file?

A CSV file is a plain-text table: one row per transaction, columns separated by commas (or semicolons in many European banks). Every bank lays its CSV out differently, with its own column names, date order and sign convention, which is why accounting software often rejects a bank's CSV as it is.

QBO to CSV: questions

Can I open a .qbo file in Excel directly?

Excel opens it as text, with tags like <TRNAMT> on every line. Converting to CSV (or straight to Excel) gives one clean row per transaction.

Is anything lost in the conversion?

No transaction data. The CSV keeps date, payee, amount, memo, check number, type and the unique transaction ID. The ending balance is in the file but not per row; convert to Excel to see it on the File info sheet.

Does it work with .qbo files from any bank?

Yes. Web Connect files follow the OFX standard, both the older SGML version and the newer XML one.

Is the QBO to CSV converter free?

Yes. Format-to-format conversions are free and need no account. Files are converted in memory and never stored. Converting PDF bank statements is a separate tool with a free daily allowance.
