OFX to QBO converter

Many banks offer an OFX download (often labelled "Microsoft Money" or "OFX") but no QuickBooks option. QuickBooks won't import a plain .ofx: it needs the Web Connect tags of a .qbo file. This converter adds them and keeps everything else, including your bank's transaction IDs.

When you need to convert OFX to QBO

  • Your bank's download menu lists OFX or Money but not QuickBooks.
  • QuickBooks Desktop refuses your .ofx file or greys it out in the import dialog.
  • You exported OFX from another program (GnuCash, Moneydance, a budgeting app) and want it in QuickBooks.

How to convert OFX to QBO

  1. Drop your .ofx file on the converter (up to 5 MB).
  2. Check that "Convert to" says QBO.
  3. Click Convert: the QBO file downloads straight away. Nothing is stored.
  4. Open or import it: QuickBooks Desktop — File → Utilities → Import → Web Connect Files, choose the .qbo file, then pick an existing bank account or create one. Review the lines in the Bank Feeds Center and add or match them.

What happens to your data

  • The INTU.BID and INTU.USERID tags QuickBooks requires are added and the file is written as OFX 1.02 SGML, the layout QuickBooks reads best.
  • Your bank's FITIDs are kept unchanged, so lines already downloaded through the bank feed aren't duplicated.
  • OFX 2.x (XML) files are converted to the 1.02 layout; account type, currency and ledger balance carry over.

What is a OFX file?

OFX is the open standard banks use to send transactions to finance software. A statement file carries the account, the currency, every transaction (date, signed amount, payee, memo, unique FITID) and the ledger balance. Version 1.x is SGML; version 2.x is XML. QBO and QFX are both OFX underneath.

What is a QBO file?

A .qbo file is a QuickBooks Web Connect file: an OFX bank file with two extra Intuit tags (INTU.BID and INTU.USERID) that QuickBooks checks before it imports. It holds one account's transactions with a posted date, signed amount, payee, memo and a unique transaction ID (FITID) per line, plus the ending balance.

OFX to QBO: questions

What's the difference between OFX and QBO?

Content-wise very little: a .qbo is an OFX file with two Intuit tags and a .qbo extension. QuickBooks checks for those tags, which is why a renamed .ofx often fails and a converted one doesn't.

Does it work with QuickBooks Online?

Yes. Upload the .qbo through Transactions → Bank transactions → Link account → Upload from file.

Can I convert a credit card OFX?

Yes. Credit card statements stay credit card statements in the .qbo, so map them to a credit card account in QuickBooks.

Is the OFX to QBO converter free?

Yes. Format-to-format conversions are free and need no account. Files are converted in memory and never stored. Converting PDF bank statements is a separate tool with a free daily allowance.

Only have a PDF statement? Convert a PDF bank statement to QBO — digital or scanned, any bank.
