How to convert OFX to Excel

What is a OFX file?
OFX is the open standard banks use to send transactions to finance software. A statement file carries the account, the currency, every transaction (date, signed amount, payee, memo, unique FITID) and the ledger balance. Version 1.x is SGML; version 2.x is XML. QBO and QFX are both OFX underneath.
What is an Excel export?
An Excel workbook with typed columns: real date cells, numbers with two decimals, separate Debit and Credit columns and a totals row, so SUM, filters and pivot tables work straight away.

Can Excel open OFX files on its own?
Not usefully: it shows the raw tags. Converting gives one row per transaction with typed columns.
Is the balance included?
The ledger (ending) balance from the OFX file is on the File info sheet. OFX files don't carry a running balance per transaction.
