When you need to convert QFX to QBO

  • Your bank's download menu offers Quicken (QFX) but not QuickBooks.
  • You're switching from Quicken to QuickBooks and have months of QFX downloads.
  • QuickBooks refuses the .qfx file when you rename it.

How to convert QFX to QBO

  1. Drop your .qfx file on the converter (up to 5 MB).
  2. Check that "Convert to" says QBO.
  3. Click Convert: the QBO file downloads straight away. Nothing is stored.
  4. Open or import it: QuickBooks Desktop — File → Utilities → Import → Web Connect Files, choose the .qbo file, then pick an existing bank account or create one. Review the lines in the Bank Feeds Center and add or match them.

What happens to your data

  • The Quicken INTU.BID is replaced with the QuickBooks one and the file is saved as .qbo.
  • Dates, amounts, payees, memos and the bank's FITIDs are unchanged, so duplicates are still detected.
  • Bank and credit card files keep their account type.

Importing the QBO file

QuickBooks Desktop
File → Utilities → Import → Web Connect Files, choose the .qbo file, then pick an existing bank account or create one. Review the lines in the Bank Feeds Center and add or match them.
QuickBooks Online
Transactions → Bank transactions → Link account ▾ → Upload from file, choose the .qbo file and the account it belongs to. The lines land in the For review tab.

What is a QFX file?

A .qfx file is Quicken's version of OFX. The content is OFX with an INTU.BID tag that identifies the bank to Quicken. Quicken imports .qfx through Web Connect and uses each transaction's FITID to skip lines it already has.

What is a QBO file?

A .qbo file is a QuickBooks Web Connect file: an OFX bank file with two extra Intuit tags (INTU.BID and INTU.USERID) that QuickBooks checks before it imports. It holds one account's transactions with a posted date, signed amount, payee, memo and a unique transaction ID (FITID) per line, plus the ending balance.

QFX to QBO: questions

Why can't I just rename .qfx to .qbo?

QuickBooks reads the identifier inside the file, not just the extension. A renamed Quicken file often fails with a message that the bank isn't supported; a converted one carries the QuickBooks identifier.

Does it work for QuickBooks Desktop and Online?

Yes, both import .qbo Web Connect files.

Is the QFX to QBO converter free?

Yes. Format-to-format conversions are free and need no account. Files are converted in memory and never stored. Converting PDF bank statements is a separate tool with a free daily allowance.
