What is a QIF file?
QIF is a plain-text format from the early days of Quicken. Each transaction is a short block of lines: D for the date, T for the amount, P for the payee, M for the memo, L for the category and N for the check number, ending with a ^. It has no transaction IDs, so importing the same file twice creates duplicates.
What is an Excel export?
An Excel workbook with typed columns: real date cells, numbers with two decimals, separate Debit and Credit columns and a totals row, so SUM, filters and pivot tables work straight away.
