CSV to OFX converter
Most finance apps prefer OFX to CSV because OFX has fixed fields and transaction IDs. Convert your bank's CSV to OFX and skip the column-mapping screen — and the duplicates when you import the same month twice.
- ✓ Free, no account, no email
- ✓ Converted in memory and never stored
- ✓ Reads files from any bank or finance app
When you need to convert CSV to OFX
- Your bank exports CSV and your software (Xero, Sage, GnuCash, Banktivity, MoneyMoney) imports OFX more reliably.
- The CSV import keeps failing on date formats or column order.
- You want duplicate protection when a statement period overlaps.
How to convert CSV to OFX
- Drop your .csv file on the converter (up to 5 MB).
- Check that "Convert to" says OFX, and pick the date order if your dates are ambiguous.
- Click Convert: the OFX file downloads straight away. Nothing is stored.
- Open or import it: Xero — Accounting → Bank accounts → choose the account → Manage account → Import a statement, then upload the .ofx file.
What happens to your data
- Date, Description and Amount (or Debit/Credit) are detected from the header; preamble lines above the header are skipped.
- European CSVs with semicolons and decimal commas (1.234,56) are read correctly.
- Every line gets a stable FITID; a Balance column becomes the ledger balance.
Importing the OFX file
- Xero
- Accounting → Bank accounts → choose the account → Manage account → Import a statement, then upload the .ofx file.
- GnuCash
- File → Import → Import OFX/QFX, then match the file to an account.
- Sage, Banktivity, MoneyMoney, Moneydance
- Each has a bank-statement import that accepts OFX; menu names vary by version.
What is a CSV file?
A CSV file is a plain-text table: one row per transaction, columns separated by commas (or semicolons in many European banks). Every bank lays its CSV out differently, with its own column names, date order and sign convention, which is why accounting software often rejects a bank's CSV as it is.
What is a OFX file?
OFX is the open standard banks use to send transactions to finance software. A statement file carries the account, the currency, every transaction (date, signed amount, payee, memo, unique FITID) and the ledger balance. Version 1.x is SGML; version 2.x is XML. QBO and QFX are both OFX underneath.
CSV to OFX: questions
Which currency does the OFX use?
CSV files rarely state a currency, so the OFX is written in USD by default. Most apps use the currency of the account you import into; check it if your software asks.
Does Xero accept the file?
Yes. Import it through Manage account → Import a statement and choose the OFX file.
Is the CSV to OFX converter free?
Yes. Format-to-format conversions are free and need no account. Files are converted in memory and never stored. Converting PDF bank statements is a separate tool with a free daily allowance.
Only have a PDF statement? Convert a PDF bank statement to OFX — digital or scanned, any bank.
