When you need to convert CSV to QIF

  • You use GnuCash, Moneydance, KMyMoney or an older Quicken that imports QIF.
  • Quicken refuses a QFX for your bank.

How to convert CSV to QIF

  1. Drop your .csv file on the converter (up to 5 MB).
  2. Check that "Convert to" says QIF, and pick the date order if your dates are ambiguous.
  3. Click Convert: the QIF file downloads straight away. Nothing is stored.
  4. Open or import it: Quicken for Windows — File → File Import → QIF File. Recent versions only accept QIF into some account types; use QFX for regular bank accounts when you can.

What happens to your data

  • Each row becomes a QIF record: D (date, MM/DD/YYYY), T (signed amount), P (payee), M (memo), N (check number), L (category if your CSV has one).
  • Debit/Credit columns are combined into one signed amount.
  • Rows without a readable date or amount (totals, blank lines) are skipped and counted in the result.

All read QIF through their File → Import menu (YNAB: file-based import in the account).

What is a CSV file?

A CSV file is a plain-text table: one row per transaction, columns separated by commas (or semicolons in many European banks). Every bank lays its CSV out differently, with its own column names, date order and sign convention, which is why accounting software often rejects a bank's CSV as it is.

What is a QIF file?

QIF is a plain-text format from the early days of Quicken. Each transaction is a short block of lines: D for the date, T for the amount, P for the payee, M for the memo, L for the category and N for the check number, ending with a ^. It has no transaction IDs, so importing the same file twice creates duplicates.

CSV to QIF: questions

Does QIF prevent duplicates?

No: QIF has no transaction IDs. Import each period once, or use OFX/QFX if your software accepts it.

Which date format does the QIF use?

MM/DD/YYYY, which Quicken and most QIF readers expect.

Is the CSV to QIF converter free?

Yes. Format-to-format conversions are free and need no account. Files are converted in memory and never stored. Converting PDF bank statements is a separate tool with a free daily allowance.

Only have a PDF statement? Convert a PDF bank statement to QIF — digital or scanned, any bank.
